The Art of Photojournalistic Wedding Photography

Not every moment on a wedding day can be planned, but some of the best ones weren’t supposed to be. It’s the way the light falls through the trees during your vows, or how your grandma squeezes your hand a little tighter when no one’s looking. It’s the in-between, the unexpected, the fleeting. I’ve spent my whole life chasing those kinds of storytelling moments — trying to freeze time not for the sake of the photo, but to remember the feeling. With photojournalistic wedding photography, it’s not just about posing or pretty details (though I love those too). I believe there’s a time and place for both, and I let my posed portraits shine just as much as the candid, heartfelt moments in every gallery. It’s about knowing when to step back, tune in, and catch something real before it’s gone. In this post, I’m sharing what those moments actually look like, how I find them, and how you can create space for them too.

The Art of Photojournalistic Wedding Photography

Capturing vs. Curating Emotion

You’ve probably seen the term photojournalistic wedding photography thrown around and wondered what it really means. For me, it’s more than a style, it’s a mindset. When you hire me, you’re not just booking someone to show up and take pretty pictures. You’re inviting someone to see the day — the real, unscripted, wildly beautiful parts of it — and preserve it in a way that feels honest to who you are.

Curating emotion means arranging moments to look a certain way, such as asking you to laugh, lean in, hold the pose. Capturing emotion, on the other hand, is watching the way your partner’s thumb brushes over your hand during the ceremony. It’s staying quiet during the tears and the toasts, because I know that this is the part you’ll want to remember most.

The Art of Anticipation

The way I photograph a wedding has very little to do with a shot list, and everything to do with presence. I’m constantly reading body language, feeling the energy of the room, and staying two steps ahead so I can catch the candid moments you might’ve missed. It all comes down to sensing when a moment is about to happen before it ever does. Only experience can give a photographer that skill. I see the way your grandpa quietly wipes a tear in the back row. The second the wind catches your veil just right. The hush that falls over the room before the ceremony starts, when everything suddenly becomes real. These aren’t the unscripted moments you can plan for, but they’re the ones that stay with you forever.

This intuitive, present approach is at the heart of what I do, and it’s what you get when you hire someone who’s not just documenting a timeline, but honoring your story. You can learn more about my process and how I work with couples over here on my weddings page.

How to Invite More Unscripted Moments

The truth is, you can’t manufacture meaningful moments, but you can create the kind of space where they’re free to unfold. Some of the most heartfelt, cinematic, and joy-filled memories I’ve captured at weddings didn’t happen on a timeline. They happened in the in-between. So how do you invite more of those unplanned, unforgettable wedding moments?

Unplug. Let go of the phone, the list, the performance. Presence is where the magic lives. Build in buffer time. When your timeline gives you breathing room, you’ll notice more. Feel more. You’ll give those in-between moments a chance to breathe. Trust your people, and your photographer. Trust allows you to let go and just be. That’s when the veil lifts, the laughter deepens, and the story starts writing itself.
